Ed White’s spacewalk in 1965 made it possible for Americans to walk on the moon just four years later. Forty-eight years after he was killed in a launch pad test, NASA presented White with a moon rock in honor of his contributions to American space exploration. White’s daughter, Bonnie Baer, accepted the award on his behalf. White isn’t the first person to be awarded NASA’s Ambassador of Exploration award—others include President John F. Kennedy and a journalist. The award encourages more people to dare to become explorers.
