In May 2018, a giant panda wandered through a village in southwestern China. She seemed to be looking for food. She didn’t seem to mind the large group of people who watched her explore the town. Researchers identified the panda as Zhenzhen. She had been raised in captivity, then released into the wild for a short time. Zhenzhen was part of a special breeding project. Scientists were hoping that she would mate with a wild panda and get pregnant. After setting her free for several hours, they took her back home.
