The US Surgeon General blames smoking for 12 types of cancer. These include lung, esophagus, and stomach cancers, as well as cancers of the mouth and throat. A new report from the American Cancer Society says that smoking leads to 3 in 10 cancer deaths in the United States. That is more than 160,000 deaths in a year just from smoking-related cancers. Researchers also looked at the smoking-related cancer deaths in each state. They found that seven of the top 10 states with the most cancer deaths were in the South. These states are Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Louisiana, Alabama, and Oklahoma. The study also showed how the tobacco industry played a role in smoking throughout the United States.
