Sgt. Charles Schroeter received the Medal of Honor in 1869. He fought in the Civil War and in the Battle of Rocky Mesa, where he earned the military’s highest honor. He was one of the 400 missing Medal of Honor recipients that the Medal of Honor Historical Society has been trying to find. After searching through record books, they found his ashes in an unmarked crypt. When a board member at the Miramar National Cemetery learned about his unmarked grave, she filled out the paperwork to have him buried at the national cemetery. Almost 100 years later, Schroeter finally received a military burial, including a rifle salute.
